Due to equipment theft, resulting in an annual loss of 100 million US dollars
2025-04-25 14:09Due to equipment theft, more than 360 pieces of equipment go missing in the US rental industry every month, resulting in an annual loss of 100 million US dollars
According to the American Rental Association (ARA), equipment theft causes an astonishing loss of up to 100 million US dollars to the rental industry each year, with more than 360 devices going missing every month. Such crimes not only consume enterprise resources, but also threaten the stable operation of key infrastructure projects across the United States. The impact of equipment theft is far more than a single financial loss. It has pushed up insurance rates and leasing costs, caused disruptions in the supply of key machinery, delayed the progress of important infrastructure, and plunged the entire industry that relies on efficient operation into difficulties.
Once the equipment is taken away from the rental site or construction site by fraudulent tenants or thieves, it is almost impossible to recover. Thieves often resell target equipment such as excavators, bulldozers and loaders to unsuspecting buyers through the black market or second-hand trading platforms.
ARA takes multiple measures to combat crime
To address the increasingly serious equipment theft crisis, ARA and law enforcement agencies have taken urgent action to raise national awareness. At a press conference held at the Lee Brothers Auction House in Morris, Illinois, ARA announced the launch of a new anti-theft and recovery program to help leasing companies identify risks and prevent theft.
Law enforcement authorities have issued guidelines for rapid and effective reporting, emphasizing timeliness. Leasing enterprises shared theft cases on the spot, highlighting the urgency of strengthening preventive measures.
In addition to raising vigilance, ARA has also launched the "Equipment Rental Protection Program" (ERG), a comprehensive security solution that will provide the rental industry with a full set of tools for tenant verification and asset protection. ERG includes training courses, SMS alerts for high-risk tenants, a national database of problem tenants and stolen devices, identity verification and other functions. At the same time, it provides reporting guidance, financial security tools and free legal support.
